One of the most exciting parts of owning a rough diamond is watching it transform into a beautiful polished gem. This process is called cutting and polishing. It is where a lot of the value is created — turning a rough stone into a sparkling diamond that can be used in jewelry.
Planning
A skilled diamond cutter carefully studies the rough diamond using 3D scans and special software. They decide the best way to cut the stone to get the maximum beauty and value. This step is very important — a good plan can make a big difference in the final result.
Cleaving or Sawing
The rough diamond is carefully split or cut into smaller pieces. The cutter follows the natural lines of the crystal to avoid breaking it.
Bruting (Shaping)
The pieces are rounded into the basic shape of the final diamond (for example, a round brilliant cut). This is done by grinding one diamond against another.
Polishing
Tiny facets (flat surfaces) are cut and polished onto the diamond. This is what creates the famous sparkle and “fire” that diamonds are known for. A well-polished diamond reflects light beautifully.
Final Inspection & Grading
After polishing, the diamond is sent to a laboratory (such as GIA) for grading. They evaluate the finished stone using the 4Cs and issue an official report.
